A problem shared…

August 25, 2022

The years are not getting any easier, with each throwing up new challenges. With stress levels high and patience in short supply, and it can be difficult to know who to turn to when things do not quite go as planned.

As the saying goes, ‘a problem shared is a problem halved.’ However, we are often contacted by clients when it is too late. The main reason quoted by clients for not involving us, or sharing their problem earlier, is cost. Cost is certainly a valid concern and often at the beginning of a matter that is not a typical transaction like a property purchase, it is difficult for us to estimate what afee might be. However, the best way to address the problem of cost is to be honest – what can you afford and what would be a suitable arrangement if the cost exceeded what you can currently afford? There is often a solution that works for both us and our clients.

The other point to note about cost is that it usually increases if we are involved at a later stage. This is because there is a lot more ‘history’ to the client’s problem to get to know and the legal process is often quite advanced. It is normal for us to be contacted when our client can no longer ignore the problem.

Some key points: It is better to contact us earlier when a problem comes to light, than later. Also, cost should not be a barrier to legal advice – it will likely cost more to ignore the problem than contact your lawyer. To make an appointment, please contact the office.
